You survived the phone screens and first rounds. Now comes the Superday—the final stage where banks make their hiring decisions. Everything you've worked for comes down to this one day of back-to-back interviews.
Here's exactly what to expect and how to maximize your chances.
What Is a Superday?
A Superday is the final round of investment banking interviews, typically consisting of 4-6 back-to-back interviews at the bank's office. Each interview runs 30-45 minutes, and you'll meet people ranging from analysts to managing directors.
Why "Superday"? Because the bank compresses all final interviews into a single (super long) day, then makes decisions quickly—often within 24-48 hours.
The Typical Superday Structure
8:30 AM: Arrive at the office. Check in with HR/recruiting. Wait in a conference room with other candidates.
9:00 AM - 12:30 PM: First 3-4 interviews. Mix of analysts/associates and VPs/Directors.
12:30 PM: Lunch (usually with junior bankers—this is still an interview, stay engaged).
1:30 PM - 4:00 PM: Remaining 2-3 interviews. Often includes at least one senior MD.
4:00 PM: Wrap-up with recruiting. They may tell you next steps or timeline.
What Each Interviewer Tests
Analyst/Associate Interviews - Technical questions (DCF, accounting, LBO basics) - "Fit" and culture assessment - "Would I want to work with this person at 2 AM?" - Often more conversational; they're evaluating peer compatibility
VP/Director Interviews - Deeper technical questions - Deal discussions and market knowledge - Your understanding of the role and industry - Professional maturity and communication skills
MD Interviews - High-level fit and "airport test" - Your story and motivations - Market awareness and intellectual curiosity - Senior presence—do you seem like someone who could be client-facing?
The Questions You'll Face
Behavioral/Fit Questions (Every Interview) - Walk me through your resume - Why investment banking? - Why this bank? - Tell me about a time you worked on a team - What's a challenging situation you navigated? - Why should we hire you?
Technical Questions (Most Interviews) - Walk me through a DCF - Walk me through the three financial statements - How does depreciation affect the statements? - What's the difference between enterprise value and equity value? - Tell me about a recent deal you found interesting - Walk me through an LBO
Market/Deal Questions (Especially Senior Interviews) - What's happening in the markets right now? - Tell me about a recent M&A deal - Why do companies do M&A? - What makes a good LBO candidate? - Where do you see interest rates going?
How to Prepare

- No alcohol
The Morning Of
- Eat a solid breakfast (protein-focused, avoid sugar crash)

During the Superday
Energy Management
You'll do 4-6 interviews back-to-back. This is exhausting. Strategies:
- Bring a water bottle. Stay hydrated.
- Use bathroom breaks to reset mentally.
- Don't let a tough interview affect the next one. Compartmentalize.
- Maintain consistent energy even as you get tired.
Reading the Room
Each interviewer has a different style. Adapt:
- Formal interviewer: Keep answers structured and professional
- Casual interviewer: Be personable while staying sharp
- Technical griller: Be precise, show your thinking process
- Conversational MD: Let the conversation flow naturally
If You Don't Know an Answer
It will happen. How you handle it matters:
"I'm not certain, but my instinct is [X]. Can you help me think through it?"
"I haven't encountered that specific scenario, but based on [principle], I would approach it by..."
Never bullshit. Interviewers respect intellectual honesty.
The Lunch Interview
Yes, lunch with junior bankers is still an interview. They will report back on you.
Do: - Be friendly and engaged - Ask thoughtful questions about their experience - Eat something (don't just push food around) - Show genuine interest in their path
Don't: - Complain about anything - Be overly formal or stiff - Dominate the conversation - Order anything messy or difficult to eat
Closing Strong
In your final interview (usually with a senior person):
- Reiterate your enthusiasm for the bank
- Ask a thoughtful question that shows you've been engaged all day
- Thank them for their time sincerely
After the Superday, send a thank-you email to each interviewer (get business cards or email names from HR).
After the Superday
Timeline: Decisions typically come within 24-72 hours. Some banks are faster.
If you get an offer: You may have limited time to decide. Know your priorities in advance.
If you don't hear back: It's okay to follow up with HR after 3-4 business days.
If you get rejected: It happens to most candidates at some point. Learn from it and move forward.
